KINNFOLK – the husband and wife duo of Josh and Julie Kinn – weave octave mandolin, bodhrán (Irish drum), and smooth vocal harmonies into their Celtic folk music from the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains. From sea shanties and working songs, to trad tunes and Old Time favorites, Kinnfolk’s fresh take on classics blends seamlessly with their original compositions. They share stories as enduring as tartan, spinning yarns steeped in Appalachian charm, enjoying playful banter with the audience. Their shows feel like a kitchen party, where everyone is family, and there’s always room for a dancer.

Exploring Celtic Music:

Let’s learn about traditional Celtic music! Presentation includes performance of traditional Irish/Scottish tunes alongside wider exploration of Celtic culture and history. Students will learn about the different instruments found in Celtic traditional music; the history of Celtic music in America; the difference between a jig and a reel; and what the word “Celtic” even means. An excellent introduction to Celtic traditional music for students of any age!

Traditional Irish Session:

An Irish session is a gathering of musicians who play traditional (or “trad”) Irish music. Unlike a choir or orchestra, the Irish session is informal in nature and is a major component of community and musical culture in Ireland. Examples of session instruments include violin (fiddle), guitar, whistle, banjo, bodhran, mandolin, voice, harp, uilleann pipes, accordion, and concertina.Students must already have a basic understanding of their instrument to participate. However, proficiency in reading music is NOT required! We’ll instruct students on session etiquette, techniques for memorizing music, and introduce them to a handful of “session standards” played by musicians all over the world. This offering works best as a recurring visit to the school, so that students can build their familiarity with the tunes and session culture over time.

Appropriate for grades 8 – 12.
