Penelope Shumate is a distinguished soprano acclaimed for her “bell-like clarity and surpassing sweetness,” as noted by The New York Times. Her presence has graced prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall and David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center in New York City, while performing works like Messiah, Carmina Burana, and Verdi’s Requiem. Her international engagements include a notable debut with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London, recording Messiah at the iconic Abbey Road Studios.

In the world of Opera, Shumate has portrayed roles such as Adina in L’Elisir d’Amore and the title character in the world premiere of Kassandra, later recording the role for Parma/Navona Records. Her versatility extends to contemporary works, exemplified by her performances in La Pasión según San Marcos by Golijov with the Gateway Chamber Orchestra.

Beyond her performance career, Shumate is committed to nurturing the next generation of vocalists.
